Help: Baby Sign Language

I remember reading on FB how someone said, "Oh I love baby sign language.  My 6 month old can tell me she's hungry." And I thought to myself- I don't need sign language for my baby to tell me he's hungry.

However, I still think baby sign language is a really good things for babies to communicate and develop brains and everything.

I've also checked out some library books on teaching sign language to your baby.
  • Any advice on that?
  • Have you done it?
  • How successful was it for you and your baby?
  • Also, how will it work with working full time? (Barb is really flexible, so I'm sure she'd try it out too if I asked her to)

I haven't really done it dilligently. I tried a little with one of my kids and it didn't seem like they really caught on much before they talked, but I'm thinking about it with Nathan as he screams often at me. I'd love to hear how it goes. I bet youtube has some videos on it.

I HIGHLY recommend the Baby Signing Time and Signing Time DVDs. Ashilene LOVED those DVDs. My sister-in-law recommended them to me and I got some for Ashilene sometime after she turned one. I would've got them sooner if I'd realized how fantastic they are. Ashilene loved them so much that I kept adding to my collection. You can find some pretty good deals on ebay if you're patient. I would put on a Signing Time DVD for us to watch while I worked out on the eliptical machine. Ashilene loved learning the signs to the fun songs. It was fun for me to learn right along with her. It was so helpful as Ashilene started learning to talk because she would be trying to tell me something and I couldn't figure out what she was saying, so she'd do the sign while saying it and then I could totally understand what she was trying to tell me. I still catch her singing some of the songs she learned from Signing Time and it's so cute!:)

I did it with all my kids, most diligently with my first. I started with basic signs like hungry, milk, more and all done when they started eating solids. You do it every time you say the word and they will sign back as soon as they can. It won't look like it at first but then they start to get it. Once they get the basic signs you can start in on signs for other things. Stuff like bird, shoes, bath, binky, whatever the baby wants to know. Let him guide you. It can be as simple or as complicated as he wants. My Jonathan was desperate to communicate so he learned TONS of signs. James, not nearly as much, so he learned the basic ones and was content to leave it at that until he could talk. Benjamin would much rather talk and hasn't been very interested in the signs at all. He wants to be like the big brothers, who no longer really sign at all so he refuses to learn it and screams/babbles at me instead. (And then gets mad when I don't know what he wants!) It all depends on the personality and how badly they want to communicate. The most important things are to first, be patient, it takes awhile before they can sign back to you sometimes, and second let the child decide what he wants to learn and when. He'll let you know.

I have the 1st completed series of Signing Time. These came out 1st and then Rachel back tracked and created Baby Signing Time. These are EXPENSIVE for my pocket book and I couldn't justify the Baby Signing Time. I've also got the 2nd and part of the 3rd series. I would totally recommend it. I did it with Hunter when he was about 14 months old. I was also working full time. By the time we was 12months old (and I was still working 5 days a week) he used 61 signs regularly. Next time your dad comes by I'll send a series back home with him. Your local library should have them to if you don't want to wait that long.
