Help: Making Johnny's Baby Food

Okay, Johnny's been eating rice and oatmeal cereal for over a month now.  It's probably time for me to try out some pureed stuff too.  We have tried bananas- he didn't like them.  We also tried zucchini earlier this week- if I disguise them in cereal really well then he will eat them.

However, I would like some hints or advice from any of you who made your own baby food.  I've checked out some books from the library, but I figure friends are probably more helpful than that.

Here are some of my questions:
  • What are some foods that your babies liked?
  • How much time did you spend preparing your own baby food? (I'm concerned about the time restraints of working full time and breastfeeding.)
  • One of the books I read had information on organic things to add to the food.  What is your advice on that?  Beyond fruits and veggies, did you add vitamins or anything?
  • Any advice on making the baby food?

I would try out food before making a whole bunch. I have done carrots, strawberries, bananas, sweet potatoes and maybe some others. I would cook (if necessary) and then blend with some water and put them in icecubes, then label them in plastic bags. It might be more effort that you may want to put forth. It doesn't take too much time though. I only made squash for Nathan because it was more convenient to just buy it.

I've never made my own baby cereal... we've always been on WIC and they gave it to us for free. That's a big deal when no adult in the home has a full time job. :) But I recently read about a cookbook for baby foods. It's by Tyler Florence. I think he's fantastic. And I like his philosophy about not hiding veggies in something else. It's called Start Fresh. I'm totally going to do it for our last three babies, now that we're are living in the real job world. Good luck and let us know how it goes! (PS It's totally okay to feed them fruit first and work in veggies gradually. It doesn't ruin their taste for veggies as bigger kids! Babies like sweet stuff... breast milk is sweet after all. Play into that. Yellow fruits and veggies were my kids' favorites ie squash, sweet potatoes, peaches, etc)
