Registering

Okay, baby stores are out of control!  I think I would rather shop at Bass Pro Shops than try to figure out what I need in a baby store.

Here's why registering for a baby is worse than registering to get married:
  1. When you're getting married, you usually have most of the stuff already, you're just registering for better stuff but it doesn't really matter if you get it or not.
  2. When you're getting married, you have some clue about what you need.  Uh, you've seen your mom use the same stuff YOUR ENTIRE LIFE!
  3. I honestly believe less things come with a marriage than come with a baby.
  4. When you're having a baby, you are doing it completely blindly.  You have no idea what you NEED and what would be nice and what is just stupid.
  5. Everything a baby NEEDS is EXPENSIVE!!!! (I do believe we are registered for 6 things over $200!)
  6. There are too many options!  In the kitchen, there's a KitchenAid or a Bosch.  For a baby there are about 25 different strollers!  Each maker has about four!  Why on earth is that even necessary?!?!?
  7. You only use the baby stuff for a few years, but none of it is optional.  "Yeah, let's pass on the crib and just use our existing twin bed." Oh yeah, great idea.
  8. There are laws about what a baby has to have.  They could care less what you feed yourself with.
  9. When registering for a baby, you've married, you know each other, you're honest, no more newlywedded bliss.  No one's sugar coating what they think- two people (one of which HATES shopping) have to compromise no matter what.
  10. And the worst thing about registering for a baby?  You feel like you got hit by a truck!  You can't even walk around the store, so your husband, who hates shopping, is pushing you around the store in a wheelchair. You could care less which color of stroller you get, you just want to get out of the dumb store.  And then your back starts to hurt.
So, here's my request of all of you out in blogger land.  What do we NEED to register for?  What do we NEED?  This is our one chance to get the stuff we might be using for all of our children and we better do it right!  What brands of things? How many?  What would be nice, but isn't necessary?!?!  What should we pay attention to when selecting products?!?! HELP US, before we're destined to raise a baby with only the accessories for our cars that Jason recognizes from his car shows.

One word...CRAIGSLIST! I've bought a ton of baby stuff there, car seats, strollers, exersaucers, clothing. I've also borrowed a lot. The major purchase we made with each kid is the crib. We bought a "lifetime" crib which goes from crib to toddelr bed to full size bed. I will never have to buy another bed for my kids and in theory they have a crib for their babies. Also, if you're going to bottle feed I reccomend borrowing bottles to see which one the baby likes. You can sterilize them...my babies have all liked different brands...but I sell those on craigslist when I'm done. I'd be happy to help you shop sometime!!

This is hilarious! I am feeling rusty on what to suggest you need. I'll think and report. Borrowing and getting hand-me-downs is a great idea. Some things may or may not work for this particular baby and they are a pain to store. ie baby swing. The monstrosity is a big pain and my babies "no likey". I've heard tips on making them work but...if you just borrow one and return if it does or doesn't work. You catch the drift.

Katie congratulations by the way! If you are planning on nursing i would recommend the medela pump, it has seriously saved my life. Also a boppy is a must. We have had really good luck with our Chicco car seat and stroller, it seeems they will last throgh all of our kids....we plan on four. A port of crib is nice. I have used mine instead of a bassinet. It has attachments that make it the same as a bassinet and then you will use it a lot afterwards whenever you go anywhere like camping or vacation. A swing was not necessary for our first but it was a necessity for our second so I would get one just in case. Hope that helps can't wait to see your little guy!

Oh my you crack me up! It's true though, there ARE a million things that you'll need. Seriously, I agree with Lola, craigslist is great and if you can borrow anything that's great too! Someone gave me their old swing which was great since my son hated it. You just never know what your little guys is gonna like or what's going to make him content. Girl, just keep searching for hand me downs! I'm so excited for you!

Some of the must haves for me were a Graco carseat. You can't take your baby home from the hospital without a carseat.;) I didn't get the travel system, just the car seat and the super lite and compact Snap N Go type stroller that fits easily in the trunk and is a breeze to take up and down. I wish I had started out with the Graco carseat that went up to 35 lbs instead of 22 lbs because my little one ended up being a chunky monkey.;) I would recommend getting car seat bases for each of your cars. That way it is super simple to take the car seat in and out of whichever car you need to use at the moment. I have found a play pen to be a must. I went with the Cosco brand instead of a Pak N Play. It is a little smaller, more light weight and a lot easier to set up and take down. Obviously a crib is a must. I like how my crib has a drawer underneath that I can store extra sheets and blankets in. A boppy and SwaddleMe were also musts for me. Each child is different, so I definitely second what everyone else has said about borrowing and getting as much as you can from Craigslist and friends. Good luck!:)
