Setting the stage for THE nap

So, remember a few posts ago when I was looking for sleeping advice?  Well, we have reached a major accomplishment- the afternoon nap!  I would like to thank all of you who gave me advice that helped to lead us to this point.  Here are some other steps that helped us reach this point of zenful bliss.

  1. Take baby to Grandma's and try to get a project done.  (This step caused steps 2 and 3)
  2. Grandma will teach you how to let baby "cry it out." Proving to you that it can be done, it's just hard in the beginning for Mommy.
  3. Grandma will try letting baby sleep on belly.  Proving THAT is how he wants to sleep.
  4. Start practicing night time sleeping on belly.  Find great success!
  5. Start practicing "crying it out" at home.  Keep practicing, it's tough on Daddy.
  6. Allow baby to nurse to heart's content, place him on belly, and wait two hours or more until he awakes.

**Back up plan- Taking baby to swim lessons, exhausting and relaxing him to better prepare him for nap time works well too!

Ta-da!

Personally, I have always been a fan of nap time when I was the one sleeping.  But now that I'm the one who can get some stuff done for longer than 20 minutes, I love it even more!

Yay! I was going to advise letting him sleep on his tummy, despite doctor's orders but I wasn't sure how it would be received. After my first had acid reflux and would literally start choking on his own spit up by sleeping on his back, I never did that again. I lie to the doctor when they ask. I've tried letting mine cry it out too, but I can't get it to work for me... mine can go for an hour or more, even as newborns. 15 minutes I can take... an hour? No way. Maybe I'm doing it wrong... You'd think I could have figured it out by the time I'd gotten to number three, huh. ;)

I lived through the SID's epidemic. There is a reason for back sleeping.
